Mulie

I thought my new store [link] needed some mule deer for the hunter folk and fellow outdoorsmen that I know, so here's a pretty little doe. (Personally I'd never want to shoot her with anything but a camera.) In my areas we tend to call mule deer 'mulies' as slang, so since this girl is pretty cute, I decided to call her that.

Multiple photographic anatomy references as well as my copy of The Art of Animal Drawing by Ken Hultgren (I highly recommend this book!) were used to help me draw this as correctly as possible, however the pose is 100% straight from my head as usual.

I was lucky enough to see a small herd of three mule deer last weekend. They're pretty common in my area. We have white tail deer too but they're extremely rare in comparison to our mulies. You mostly get them in the next valley over and you can see them grazing in fields around dusk and dawn. Mule deer (my favourite, for their prettier coat colours) prefer to stick to the forest.
